A new edition of Part G (Sanitation, hot water and water efficiency) of the Building Regulations for England and Wales comes into force in April 2010. The new Part G legislation has several changes and one of the most significant is that baths in new domestic properties must be fitted with a protective device, such as a thermostatic mixing valve (TMV), to limit the temperature of hot water at the bath outlet to a safe maximum of 48ºC.

In November 2003 Buildcert launched a new scheme for the testing of thermostatic mixing valves called the TMV2 scheme.
TMV2 valves are specifically designed, built and tested for the domestic market. The basis of the performance testing for TMV2 are the European standards BSEN 1111 and BSEN 1287. Other requirements like audit testing, instructions, marking etc. are also included.
|
Only valves that have been tested and approved to the TMV2 scheme should be used to control the bath water temperature as they have been independently verified to comply with the requirements of Part G.

Concern about cross contamination in some areas of healthcare institutions, for example a surgeon's scrub trough, means that hands-free operation can become as important as the protection from scalding.
The new Caremix® IR3 infra-red controlled thermostatic tap fits both bills. All of the normal features of the popular Caremix® range are still there: like integral isolating valves, filters and flow regulators and the TMV3 level of scald protection demanded in the healthcare environment, but with the added benefit of hands-free operation. The system can be supplied as battery operated or mains connected through a transformer depending on customer preference and site suitability.
