Overview: Expansion Vessels

Expansion vessels are for use whenever tanks are needed in water systems e.g

Water booster systems
Residential and commercial well water
Water heaters
Irrigation systems
Fire-fighting systems

The membrane type tank is suitable for all types of water, even corrosive water or water with high levels of calcium.  The water only comes into contact with the membrane and the stainless steel flange and so eliminates the possibility of corrosion.

The membrane, made of butyl (tested to BS 6920 Pt's 1 to 4) is suitable for use with drinking water.

Expansion to waste is generally not allowed in the UK even though it is common practice in the rest of Europe.

An expansion vessel is an accepted method of accommodating the normal increase in the volume of water when heated within the system

The drawings below show how a typical bag type membrane expansion vessel operates:

If the system volume is known, expansion vessels can be sized with the formula:

                                 V=       eC

                                         1 –  p1

                                                 p2

V            The total volume or nominal size of the expansion vessel. It is not the acceptance volume.  (See product description).

C            The total volume of water in the system (litres)

P1          The fill pressure of the system in Bars absolute (atmospheric or gauge pressure plus one Bar).

P2          The setting of the expansion/pressure relief valve in Bars absolute atmospheric or gauge pressure plus one Bar).

e            The expansion factor that relates to the maximum system requirements.

                                 Expansion factor ‘e’    Temperature °C

                                    0.0359                               90
                                    0.0396                               95
